Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?

Dr. Bennett uses sedation during your dental procedure to ensure you’re completely comfortable the entire time. He can vary the sedation to your needs and wants, too. Some of the common levels of sedation include:

Mild sedation

Under mild sedative, you’ll be awake during your entire appointment. You’ll be able to speak normally, but you’ll be sedated enough to feel relaxed.

Conscious sedation

If you’d prefer to know less about your dental procedure, Dr. Bennett can use conscious sedation techniques. Under conscious sedation, you stay awake but will have limited memory of your procedure. Slurred speech is common.

General anesthesia

Whether your procedure requires it or you prefer it, Dr. Bennett can make you completely unconscious during your appointment using general anesthesia.

What kinds of sedation can be used?

To best meet the needs of his patients and ensure their comfort, Dr. Bennett has a variety of sedation options.

Oral sedation

Feeling relaxed during your dental appointment could be as simple as taking a pill or a dose of liquid. Oral, also known as enteral, sedation will calm you, often making you feel drowsy. In fact, you may drift off to sleep during your procedure but can be awakened easily.

Inhaled sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has long been used by dentists to ensure patient comfort. If you choose to use nitrous oxide, you will inhale it through a gas mask. Dr. Bennett controls the dosage to ensure you’re relaxed during your appointment but are back to normal shortly after.

Deep sedation

If you prefer or need to be unconscious during your appointment, Dr. Bennett uses general anesthesia. Under this anesthesia, you cannot be awakened until the effects wear off.

Note that under almost every kind of sedation, with the only exception being very low doses of nitrous oxide, you will need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
